Nintendo’s interactive figurines are on their way so I thought I’d go ahead and knock together a thread with all the info released so far. Bound to be a few confused parents (and gamers) out there in need of help!
What is an Amiibo?
Amiibo is Nintendo’s foray into the interactive toy market. They are little figurines based on Nintendo characters, and use NFC (near-field communication) to interact with Nintendo hardware, in a similar way to those of Disney Infinity and the Skylanders series. Nintendo plan to make them compatible with most of their upcoming line-up of games on Wii U, plus a few that have already been released.
When and where can I get them?
Nintendo are releasing the first batch of figures on November 28th in the UK. They are available to pre-order at most toy stores, gaming outlets, and online shops. They currently range between £10-13.
Which consoles use them?
Upon release, the figures will only be compatible with the Wii U. Nintendo are releasing an attachment for the 3DS/3DS XL in 2015 which will add compatibility with those handheld consoles. The New 3DS/New 3DS XL handhelds which are due to be released in 2015 have NFC technology built in. Amiibo does not work with the Wii, or the DS/DSi/DSi XL.
What games do they work with?
The first game with Amiibo functionaility is Super Smash Bros for the Wii U. Players can generate computer-controlled characters in the game to fight alongside in battle. By training these characters they can level up and gain new abilities.
Nintendo will be adding Amiibo functionality for Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors for the Wii U in future software updates. They have announced that Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Mario Party 10, and Yoshi’s Wooly World – Wii U games due to be released in 2015 – will also have Amiibo functionality. Amiibo functionaility will also be added to Super Smash Bros for 3DS in a future update.
